TYMPANOPLASTY

What is a tympanoplasty?

Surgery to fix a hole in the eardrum, known as tympanoplasty, is a microsurgical procedure that offers a promising solution. This operation not only improves hearing but also eliminates recurrent ear infections that haven't responded to standard treatments, giving hope for a healthier future.

What is the difference between a tympanoplasty and a myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty and tympanoplasty are both procedures that repair a hole in the eardrum. A graft, often created from a piece of fascia (muscle covering), bone, vein, or cartilage, is used during these procedures to cover the hole. For small holes, a paper or gel graft is occasionally employed. During myringoplasty, only the tympanic membrane (eardrum) is examined and treated. For tympanoplasty, grafting is performed alongside an examination of the ossicles (ear bones), which are treated if damaged or infected.

Why is a tympanoplasty performed?

When the eardrum has a hole that doesn't close on its own, Dr Nel may perform a tympanoplasty. This procedure is crucial in restoring hearing and preventing water from entering the middle ear, thereby maintaining the health of your ear.

The eardrum can perforate due to:

  • Infections that cause the eardrum to burst
  • Ventilation (ear) tubes that fall out or are removed
  • Injuries puncturing the eardrum
  • Cholesteatoma, a growth within or behind the eardrum

Who needs a tympanoplasty?

Tympanoplasty is often required to repair a perforated eardrum that is unable to heal independently. It's essential to be vigilant for signs such as ear drainage and hearing loss, as early detection can make a significant difference. A perforated eardrum may arise from a traumatic head injury, serious or recurrent ear infections, formation of a skin cyst in the ear, insertion of something like cotton wool deep within the ear canal and pressure from a blast injury.

Tympanoplasty is a versatile procedure that can be performed in different settings. It may be done in the comfort of the doctor’s rooms with local anaesthetic or in a theatre under general anaesthetic. This flexibility ensures that the procedure can be tailored to the patient's specific needs and circumstances.
