LARYNGEAL SURGERIES
What are laryngeal surgeries?
Surgery to remove cancer is the most common treatment for laryngeal cancer. The larynx, or voice box, can be removed entirely or partially. A laryngectomy is the name for this procedure. The sort of procedure required is determined by the location and size of the malignancy in the larynx. Laryngectomy is frequently used in conjunction with other therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, to help eliminate cancer and prevent it from returning.
Types of Laryngeal surgeries
- A partial laryngectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part of the vocal cords. A portion of the larynx is released in this procedure. You will be able to speak following the surgery, although your voice may not sound the same.
- laryngeal carcinoma, this may be the sole option. To allow you to breathe, a hole is cut in the front of your neck. After the surgery, you won't be able to speak.
- A hemilaryngectomyn is where only half or one side of the larynx is removed during surgery. After the procedure, you will be able to speak, but your voice may sound different.
- Cordectomy: Voice chord surgery, which involves removing some or all of the vocal cords. If some of the chords are gone, your voice will become hoarse. You won't be able to converse if all of the wires are removed.
- Stripping the vocal cords: The cancer cells on the surface of the vocal cords are removed in this way. The majority of people do not notice any changes in their capacity to communicate.
- Laser surgery is a procedure that involves the use of a laser to eliminate a tumour or abnormality on the larynx's surface. Your voice may get hoarse as a result of this.
- Supraglottic laryngectomy is a laryngectomy that removes the upper part of the voice box. Only the upper section of the larynx, above the vocal cords, is removed. It does not affect your voice.
- Dissection of the neck. The lymph nodes in the neck where cancer has spread or is likely to spread are removed during surgery. Nerves, muscles and lymph nodes are all removed during a complete radical neck dissection. This can have an impact on how your neck and shoulders move.
What is laryngeal cancer?
Cancer of the larynx, or voice box, is known as laryngeal cancer. Voice changes, such as hoarseness and a persistent sore throat or cough, are signs of laryngeal cancer.
How long does the surgery take?
The length of surgery depends on the surgery taking place. A laryngectomy can last between five and twelve hours.
What does recovery entail?
If you've had part or all of your larynx removed (laryngectomy), you'll probably need to stay in an intensive care unit for 1 or 2 days until you've recovered. You won't be able to eat anything until your throat heals, which usually takes at least a week.
