TONSILLECTOMY

The tonsils are removed during a tonsillectomy. The operation is performed to alleviate sleeping problems and to treat recurring infections. Tonsils are two oval-shaped tissue pads located in the back of the throat, one on each side. Although your tonsils are an essential element of your immune system, removing them does not increase your risk of infection. Tonsillectomy was previously a standard treatment for treating tonsil infection and irritation (tonsillitis) and is now commonly used to treat sleep apnoea as well.

Why is a tonsillectomy performed?

Tonsillectomy is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Tonsillitis that is recurrent, chronic, or severe
  • Enlarged tonsil complications
  • Tonsil bleeding
  • Rare tonsil diseases
  • Recurrent throat infections with swollen and infected tonsils
  • Breathing difficulty during sleep

What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped tissue pads at the back of the throat. Swollen tonsils, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck are all signs and symptoms of tonsillitis. Viruses commonly cause tonsillitis, but bacterial infections can also lead to the condition.

How is a tonsillectomy performed?

Tonsillectomy can be done in a variety of ways, including:

  • Electrocautery: This treatment removes the tonsils and stops any bleeding by using heat.
  • Tonsils are removed with a scalpel using a cold knife (steel). Sutures or electrocautery are used to halt the bleeding.
  • Harmonic scalpel: This technique uses ultrasonic vibrations to cut and stop bleeding from the tonsils simultaneously.
  • Radiofrequency ablation techniques, a carbon dioxide laser, and/or a microdebrider are other options.

What do tonsils do?

Tonsils help prevent infection by producing antibodies and trapping germs that enter your mouth.

How long does a tonsillectomy take?

The procedure usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

What does recovery entail?

Each person's recovery from a tonsillectomy is unique, however, pain is usual following surgery, and it can get worse 3 to 4 days afterwards. The area where the tonsils were removed may also be discoloured, but this should clear up in about 3 to 4 weeks.

After the tonsillectomy, you should plan on resting at home for at least a week and limiting your activity for at least two weeks.
